Twitter passes 10bn tweets

Twitter has surpassed 10bn tweets since its launch less than four years ago, with 20% of tweets now containing a reference to a product or brand, according to an independent report.

Only 16 of the UK's top 100 companies are using the micro-blogging site to communicate with customers, according to a study by Virgin Media Business.

Publicly launched in July 2006, more than 50m tweets are posted via Twitter every day, while a staggering 5bn have been posted since last October. However, while 57 of the FTSE 100 companies have signed on to Twitter, 72% have not used their account to respond to customer enquiries or comments made about the company.
