TV gains a dimension
by Sean Japp, Head of TV
If, like me your previous 3d experiences were confined to some dodgy weekend on C4 back in the 1980's (in between waiting for The Jam coming onto The Tube and playing A Town Called Malice and Precious live) then it's probably time for old dinosaurs like me to state now that 3d is going to take over TV Viewing in the UK.
I'm lucky enough to have a 4 year old son and taking him to see Monsters vs Aliens, Bolt and the best film of the last five years, Up, in 3d was probably enjoyed more by the old man rather than young man. Seeing 3d TV work at Sky's Berry Brothers presentation with the Anfield Kop singing Walk On and Ricky Hatton boxing in Las Vegas was inspiring. Most TV Buyers that were there were bobbing and weaving just like the old days when we could still have a rumble before spreadsheets took over. Anyway, I digress.
Knowing that this capability is held within every HD Box that Sky sell/give away is pleasing. My biggest fear is that the majority of the UK has in the last 3 years upgraded to flatscreen LCD/Plasma's ready for their fix of HD football and my own particular favourite golf. Will they spend on purchasing a 3d Telly? Certainly the early adopters will. Whether the mass audience do remains to be seen. I can't wait for the first Sony commercial whether it be balls bouncing down a hill in San Francisco or paint blowing up in Glasgow.
Yet again, Sky set the standard. Let's see if the public follows.
