Does Facebook’s dominance know no bounds?
by Gail Anderson, Trainee Comms Planner
As the social networking site surpasses 500 million users, other media channels have decided it’s their turn for a bite of the cherry. On the 15th of October ‘The Social Network’ is released, a movie documenting the creation of Facebook. This film’s pedigree is impressive: it’s written by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, based on Ben Mezrich’s racy but not exactly factual book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’, and was first picked up for development by Kevin Spacey who takes an executive producer credit on the finished film. It is already expected to be a box office hit and bloggers are expecting great things from the project.
With Facebook influencing nearly every type of media on the planet and creating new realities for those who are ‘logged in,’ the creation of this movie begs the question: ‘does life still imitate art?’ Online realities seem to blur the distinction between reality and art more than Wilde could have ever anticipated. So all that remains to be seen is will you be watching?
