Britain has fallen out of love with celebrities

by Lee Dick, Planner/Buyer

A recent article in Media Week by John Myers, link below, suggests that the good people of Britain are losing their love for all things celebrity. If this is the case it could be bad news for all those celebs who top up their bank balances by appearing in Iceland adverts and such like!

A quick look at OK!s circulation shows a drop of 18% period on period and 20% year on year. Now recorded a drop of 15% pop, Start 10.5% and New! 4%. Maybe these figures back up Myers theory that we’re losing interest; however over at Channel Five, recently acquired by Richard Desmond, the owner of celeb bible OK! New programming content is going to be very celebrity focussed. With programmes featuring Kerry Katona and Kym Marsh, along with celeb led news output, and Live From Studio 5 being renamed OK TV. Clearly Desmond does not think the age of the celebrity is dead - it’ll be interesting to see the viewing figures next year.

Personally I hope it’s true, as there’s nothing interesting about people being famous for nothing . If I see Jordan’s botoxed face on the cover of one more magazine I think I might scream!
